AFerry Summer Trips to Guernsey

June 21, 2017 By sue

When travelling to Guernsey in the Channel Islands, expect the best of both England and France as geographically, the island is closer to France - just 30 miles - a little nearer than the 70 miles from the south coast of England. With customs probably more aligned to Brittany than to Britain, there’s an interesting mix of the best of both countries on offer with English widely spoken.

Once home to Victor Hugo, the Bailiwick of Guernsey, with its laid back atmosphere and long summer days, is a particularly fascinating island to visit in the summer months. Guernsey is home to Britain’s cleanest beach at Vazon Bay, the world’s smallest chapel – Little Chapel - and, as the locals tend to say, the prettiest harbour town in Europe, St.Peter Port, which was also the winner of the RHS Britain in Bloom 2014 loveliest coastal town. It’s a real walker’s paradise with clifftop trails and coastal paths which are easy to follow with the help of audio guides and interactive maps. The little islands of Hern, Sark and Alderney are not far away by boat or plane and there’s plenty to keep a visitor occupied.

What’s on in Guernsey this Summer:

Sporting fans will enjoy Motorsport Seafront Sunday, 16th July in St Peter’s Port, the Sark Sheep Racing (over hurdles actually) 21st - 23rd July 2017 or the Guernsey Marathon 27th August 2017 in St.Peter Port. 2017 marks the 108th anniversary of the launch of the event (which includes a 17 year hiatus) and a large difference in the number of competitors - just four runners entered the event in 1909!
For a very ‘different’ venue, the famous Shrine of the Sacred Heart on the Fort Hommet headland is made entirely of seashells. A concert is held there once a month throughout the summer on the following dates: 1st July, 5th August, 2nd September and 7th October.
There are three annual shows on the island and this is one of them - South Show 11th - 12th August 2017 at St.Martin’s Community Centre. Expect the locals to show off their baking skills, their prized produce and crafts with great refreshments, a variety of games and bric-à-brac.
For Foodies, there’s the Guernsey Food Festival 16th – 24th September 2017 which is now in its third year and growing in popularity due to the mix of markets and shows, demonstrations by international chefs, restaurant promotions and so on. Last year saw visits from chefs as far away as St Lucia, Gibraltar and Florida with the big event being a Taste of Southern India.
Alternatively, enjoy a guided walk of St. Peter’s Port that take place everyday throughout the summer or listen to a concert in Market Square between May and September. The Mermaid Tavern Real Ale and Cider Festival on Hern is a firm favourite serving 60 different ales and ciders. It takes place twice a year in 13th - 18th June and 12th – 18th September 2017. Hern is the perfect place to relax with no cars, no crowds and no stress.
Guernsey is a seven hour journey from Poole or Portsmouth with Condor Ferries. Compare and book your crossing with AFerry.co.uk.
