Debbie Reynolds‘ film career began at MGM after she won a beauty contest at the age of 16 by impersonating Betty Hutton. She finally made the headlines when she was selected to be Gene Kelly’s partner in ‘Singin’ in the Rain‘ – I hope she remembered her umbrella!
Only twelve years later, when her shoes had finally dried out, it felt like Debbie had been around forever! She had only turned 31 when she gave an Academy Award nominated performance in ‘The Unsinkable Molly Brown‘.
Still alive today after a run of unlucky marriages and the closure of her own casino in 1997, I think some people might be changing the title of that film to ‘The Unsinkable Debbie Reynolds’.
