I was recently very lucky to visit Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, the exclusive abbey hotel and winery dating from 1146 in Spain’s Duero wine region. The Hotel has recently set a new standard for spas in Spain with the opening of ‘El Santuario’ in July. Just a two hour drive from Madrid, LeDomaine today has been reborn as a contemporary-styled, 30-room hotel, located in a beautiful enclave on the banks of the Duero River, in the midst of the award winning vines of the Abadia Retuerta vineyards. With the original Abbey of Santa Maria de Retuerta dating back to 1146, Swiss architect, Marco Serra, has cleverly ensured continuance of use with the hotel itself housed within the former hospice of the Abbey, the gastronomic restaurant residing in what was once the refectory, the cloisters becoming the hotel’s corridors and even the original church as been restored.
As expected the nurturing and innovative sanctuary features luxurious facilities; but also offers a ground-breaking vinotherapy concept based on a blind tasting of wines and is home to Europe’s first ‘Spa Sommeliers’ who guide you on you wellness journey.
Among the new spa’s guest facilities are: four individual treatment rooms, a Spa Suite, outdoor rain showers, indoor heated pool, outdoor pool with a snack menu, and separate ladies and men’s wellness areas each with a sauna, steam baths, experience showers, hydrotherapy pools, relaxation room and changing areas. Among the wellbeing offerings are Pilates, personal training sessions, yoga, meditation and Qi Gong. All treatment journeys start at €80 for 30 minutes, and the spa suite can be hired from €300 for two and a half hours. If you want to indulge even further and stay at LeDomaine rooms start at €360 with breakfast.
