Ile d’Aix - The silhouette might give it away. The incomparable Ile d’Aix was where Emperor Napoléon spent his last night on French soil The building he stayed in is now a museum dedicated to him. This is just one of the delights of this sleepy little fortified island accessible by ferry from Fouras on the mainland in Charente-Maritime.
Largely car free, rent a cycle and circle the island and marvel at this peaceful oasis.
There’s one lovely hotel on the island where no new building is allowed - surprisingly called Hôtel Napoléon with the restaurant named after Joséphine - naturellement.
