Les Halles de Lyon - Paul Bocuse in Lyon is a true utopia for gourmands everywhere and surely the perfect place to do some Christmas food shopping for the festive season.
OK - so Les Halles is just slightly outside the centre of Lyon but the effort is well worth it as the rewards can be bountiful. Around 60 traders sell here under one roof, supplying local products and eager to talk food and drink. What could be nicer? English is often spoken here with ex-pats coming to learn from the best and it is fascinating to hear the complete history of, say, a particular cheese - who produced it, what their cow or goat ate and even what secret ingredient is added to give a slightly different texture or flavour!
If you explain that you are travelling home, many will actually vacuum-pack your goodies for you so you don’t stink out your travel provider on the way home. On my last trip to Lyon, my suitcase was nearly torn apart by my friends and relatives eager to get at the goodies inside so you can be sure of a very happy welcome home!
