I have just begun to discover the beauty of the Surrey Hills area, just outside of London, thanks to our new client reopening soon this September, the historic Mercure Box Hill Burford Bridge Hotel. This was taken at one of the many (I am discovering) best viewpoints at Newlands Corner, not far from Guildford’s bustling town centre.
Newlands Corner is a popular picnic site and beauty spot on a ridge of the Albury Downs, part of the North Downs, at a height of 567 feet (173 m). Together with the Silent Pool, it forms part of the privately owned Albury Estate SSSI managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust.
It was here, apparently, that crime writer Agatha Christie disappeared in December 1926 before being discovered, incognito, at a hotel in Harrogate. As a result, Newlands Corner is the setting of the climax of the final scene of the Doctor Who episode, “The Unicorn and the Wasp.”
