For the sixth in our Hotel Facts series, we return again to Spain, the Castile y Leon area and Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine - a privately owned historic winery and hotel estate dating back to the twelfth century. This obelisk, above, signposts the location of the property’s outdoor sculpture exhibit - The Hedge Museum.
Perfectly coiffed hedges form a mini-maze, hiding and revealing a collection of works by the contemporary Swiss artist Ulrich Rückriem who extracts massive stones from the earth and reassembles them on the surface. The museum is noted both for its collection and for its singular architectural concept.
The shrubs planted around the cement walls, change colours with the seasons, creating different settings for the minimalist sculptures as the seasons change. Colours change from vermilion in spring, violet in summer and vivid green in autumn and winter.
Other art and antiques are situated throughout the hotel itself.
