Five things you didn't know about Santa Monica Pier!

September 1, 2011 By Alexandra Leave a Comment

The famous Santa Monica Pier is a landmark of Los Angeles and California and has served as an icon for summer fun on the beach for many years.

Did you know…

Santa Monca Pier is now over 100 years old - It was completed 9th September 1909 after sixteen months of construction. Thousands of people swarmed onto the 1,600 ft long concrete pier to enjoy a festive day of band concerts & swimming races.

Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the famous Route 66 - Route 66 was created in 1926 as a link between Chicago and Los Angeles. After much speculation and debate over the offical end of the road in Santa Monica, in 2009 the Route 66 Alliance named Santa Monica Pier as the proud owner of the title!

The pier is home to the first solar-powered wheel in the world - ‘Pacific Wheel’ ferris wheel is nine stories high and is the only over-water ferris wheel in California!

The Looff Hippodrome Carousel on the Pier was Santa Monica’s first National Historic Landmark - the carousel built in 1922 was where Paul Newman famously worked in The Sting.

Santa Monica Pier has its very own Trapeze School - with high-flying, fun-filled experiences for everyone and anyone - from serious aerialist’s to coach potatoes! The popstar ‘Pink’ even trained here for her tour and appearance at the VMA’s 2009! Trapeze School New York: http://losangeles.trapezeschool.com/
