Have a brush with Basel this Summer and Autumn

May 18, 2017 By Alexandra

From Wolfgang Tillmans to open air festivals to alfresco dining there is something for everyone this summer and autumn in Basel.

In the Open Air:

Imfluss Festival 27th June - 12th August - A must-see of the summer season, theInfluss sets it’s stages on the Rhine as revellers take up a spot on the bank.

Open Air Basel 10th - 12th August - now in it’s sixth year Open Air Basel plays host to international musicians for a two day party with a socially conscious undertone as they raise money and awareness for clean drinking water worldwide. Three day tickets cost CHF65 on pre-sale or CFH70 when purchased at the box office.

Cool down at one of the many Buvettes, these little bars are along the Rhine and perfect for a drink or a snack in the sun.

Opening Exhibitions:

Wolfgang Tillmans, Fondation Beyeler, 28th - May - 1st October 2017 - From intimate still-lifes and portraits, to images that address vital political issues, this exhibition will explore the photographs of the groundbreaking artist Wolfgang Tillmans.

Tino Sehgal, Fondation Beyeler, 28th - May - 31st October 2017 - Born in London in 1976, the Berlin-based artist Tino Sehgal constructs situations that challenge conventional art-and-spectator relationships, focusing on the fleeting gestures and social subtleties of lived experience rather than on material objects. The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler will consist of six works either shown in the garden or the galleries.

Richard Serra, Kunstmuseum Basel Gegenwart, 20th May – 15th October 2017- The exhibition turns the spotlight on Serra’s work in film, which goes back to 1968 and has been a crucial source of impulses for his artistic and experimental use of both media.

The Hidden Cézanne, Kunstmuseum Basel New Building, 10th June – 24th September 2017 - One of the founding artists of modern art, Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) is now widely acclaimed as the preeminent painter of the late nineteenth century. Less well known is his groundbreaking work as a drafts-man. The Kunstmuseum Basel’s contains 154 sheets by Cézanne, making it the most comprehensive and significant collection of the artist’s drawings in the world. The collection dates back to the 1930s, attesting to the museum’s farsighted collection policy.
Jérôme Zonder, The Dancing Room, Museum Tinguely, 7th June – 1st November 2017 - To mark the opening of Tinguely’s Mengele-Totentanz (Mengele Dance of Death) in the Museum Tinguely’s new exhibition space, the young French artist Jérome Zonder will rouse the undead with a series of mischievous images snatched from real life. His installation of drawings assembles interpretations of the TV series The Walking Dead – with scenes of violence or the aftermath of accidents and disasters masquerading as innocuous children’s games. It is the first in a series of replicas adding further chapters to Basel’s Dance of Death
Wim Delvoye, Museum Tinguely, 14th June 2017 – 1st January 2018 - The Museum Tinguely is to dedicate a major solo exhibition to the Belgian artist Wim Delvoye in the summer of 2017. In addition to his best known works, the Cloaca, which are machines that simulate human digestion and produce excrement that is visually indistinguishable from human excrement, the show will also feature pieces such as Chantier (1992), a construction site carved entirely out of wood and the huge Cement Truck (2016) in its original size. With a hefty shot of irony, wit and humour, this conceptualist provocateur often combines the decorative with the quotidian and by doing so casts doubt on consumer society’s conventional value systems.

Events to make a splash:
Swiss National Day - Basel traditionally begins its celebration of Swiss National Day on July 31 with a city festival on the Rhine. More than 90 food stands and sales stalls, as well as numerous music stages and performances set the mood on both sides of the Rhine until 2 o´clock the following morning. The festival area stretches along the Kleinbasler side of the Rhine from the Johanniterbrücke to the Wettsteinbrücke and in Grossbasel from the Johanniterbrücke to the Mittlere Brücke, and from the harbour to the Marktplatz.

Rhine swimming - On the 15th August join in the fun and jump in the Rhine.

Autumn Fair - 28th October – 12th November

Notes for editors: Nestled in the heart of Europe where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, Basel - just a 10-minute drive from Basel EuroAirport - is a pocket-sized metropolis that combines Swiss quality with a multicultural population. The 40 museums, all with long-established collections and spectacular exhibitions are the foundation of Basel’s reputation as a city of culture. However, art is not only found in the myriad of museums, but is encountered across the entire city. Exciting juxtapositions are cast by the classical patrician houses and mediaeval churches side by side with modern buildings designed by major international architects such as Herzog & de Meuron or Renzo Piano. Foodies will not be disappointed in Basel either. Thanks to the city’s location, its cuisine is both excellent and eclectic. From the sunny banks of the Rhine, to the romantic streets of the Old Town to the countless boulevard cafés and trendy bars – every taste is catered for. There is always something going on in Basel!
