The only white wine produced in the northern region of the Duero Valley

LeDomaine 2011, ABADÍA RETUERTA’S FIRST WHITE WINE

The Sardón de Duero winery presents a white terroir wine characterised by its magnificent aging potential.

Abadía Retuerta, the Sardón de Duero winery, has come of age. It has now launched its very first white wine, Abadía Retuerta Le Domaine 2011, the only one to be produced in the region. The grapes used to make this wine come mainly from the Sauvignon Blanc vines planted 18 years ago and in the words of Enrique Valero, Abadía Retuerta’s Managing Director, this is a “new wine, yet one with a history behind it”. These Sauvignon Blanc vines appeared somewhat unexpectedly on a plot planted with the Merlot variety back in 1994. The almost 900 plants brought ‘by chance’ to the land have been harvested regularly since 1998 in order to test the potential of Abadía Retuerta’s white wine.

Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine’s white wine:

Following annual studies of their early experimental production, the Sauvignon Blanc variety has been shown to adapt well to the characteristics of this estate, in regards to both its climate and soil. It has become infused with the open-minded spirit that welcomed its arrival, despite the area’s long-standing tradition in the exclusive production of red wines. The soil in which these vines lie is warm and blessed by endless hours of sunshine, guaranteeing an optimum ripening process each year. To add a touch of complexity, for the last two years, buds from Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, Godello and other varieties have been grafted onto the Merlot plants in this plot. Since the 2009 vintage, this white wine has been made up of 75-80% Sauvignon Blanc and the remaining 20-25% of other varieties, principally Verdejo.

The resulting wine is both original and surprising and is left to rest for between five and six months in new barrels. This is a wine that is no longer the result of chance, but instead reflects all the character for which Abadía Retuerta is renowned.

This wine has already been acclaimed in both the Spanish and international markets. Particularly worthy of mention are the two consecutive gold medals obtained at the ‘Sauvignon Blanc du Monde’ contest and the fact that it was chosen as ‘Women’s Favourite Wine’ at the event organised by the Spanish Association of Women Wine Lovers.

A name steeped in history and a unique experience:

Abadía Retuerta is more than just a wine: it is a space in which to sense and experience wine on the banks of the River Duero and the chance to enjoy a personalised wine tourism experience of outstanding quality. On this estate everything has its place and behind each detail is a story waiting to be told, relating to both the wine and the hotel. The hotel is situated in a 12th century monastery and it’s for this reason that the winery pays tribute to the hotel that shares its name with the wine – Le Domaine, which opened to the public in March 2012.

This is what makes Abadía Retuerta more than just a winery: it is a space in which to discover the world of wine, from the vine to tasting. For this reason, the winery has designed a series of activities that are linked to wine making, such as the tasting sessions or 4×4 tours of the vineyards. Now, Abadía Retuerta has taken this area of its business a stage further to become a wine tourism destination of the highest standard. This is thanks to the opening of the LeDomaine hotel and its exclusive restaurant serving exquisite local cuisine, plus a wide range of wine-related activities.
