With its equitable climate, Poitou-Charentes, the sunniest part of western France, is a region where visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions. From the famous and unique Marais Poitevin, a UNESCO area known as the green Venice, the historic La Rochelle with its fine restaurants and magnificent sites to the fine unspoilt beaches, there is something for everyone. The adventurous traveller can explore the wonders of Futuroscope, a unique theme park for the senses, close to the city of Poitiers, the regional, historical capital, which has recently experienced significant investment. Another must see is stunning Angoulême, the cartoon capital of France and home to the celebrated Circuit des Remparts, vintage car rally on the old ramparts, each year.
Poitou-Charentes is also home to Rochefort, a past naval base which today houses the Hermione – a replica of the historic ship which took Lafayette to America, due to set sail once more in 2015. The ship has been built from scratch with traditional methods to an historic plan.
A perfect family holiday destination, Poitou-Charentes delights adults and their juniors. Parents can create their own blend of Cognac in the famous town, go cycling on the beautiful Île de Ré, or relax in one of the areas spas and then join their children on adventures such as Monkey Valley or the Crocodile Park. With a variety of accommodation, from campsites and B&B’s to well established hotels, the region of Poitou-Charentes has an ideal break for all tastes and budgets.
