CDT Hautes-Pyrénées, France
The Pyrénées form a majestic frontier over
450 km in length between France and Spain. In the middle of this
formidable barrier lies the ‘départment’ of Hautes-Pyrénées.
The area is renowned for its natural beauty and plethora of activities
that are available year round. In winter of course skiing, snow
boarding and other snow-based sports abound but in summer too there
are many sites to visit and activities to undertake. The highest
points of the Pyrénées lie in the Hautes-Pyrénées
and the wild, varied countryside offers something for even the most
fickle of tastes. There are lakes and waterfalls, rivers and natural
springs (hence the existence of several spas) verdant plains and
forests where unique species of flora and fauna can be found.
Noteworthy attractions include the Pic du Midi - at 2,877m - the
Observatory has been here since 1880 offering the most marvellous
opportunities to astronomers, stargazers and scientists alike; Lourdes,
which celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2008 and the cirques of
Gavarnie – now a UNESCO protected area of natural beauty,
it is one of the most breathtaking experiences of the Pyrénées.
