Architecture
§
Semiahmoo Resort (Blaine, Washington) is set on a 1,100-acre wildlife preserve that is a peninsula
surrounded by Puget Sound. The logs that make this
Northwest lodge were brought up from the bottom of a lake in South Carolina. Guests have included: Gregory Peck, Jerry
Seinfeld, Margaret Thatcher and Patrick Ewing.

Charleston
Place (Charleston, South Carolina) is not from the antebellum period, but architects have strived
to recreate the ambience so that it fits in with other buildings in the
historic district. The building even has
faux earthquake bolts, which can be seen on neighbouring historic buildings.
Historical Ties

The Carlton Hotel (St. Moritz, Switzerland) was built in 1913 as a summer residence for Russian Tsar Nikolaj
I, son of the famous Romanoff Dynasty and grandson of Tsar Alexander II. Guests have included: Steffi Graf, Roger
Moore and Juan Carlos П (King of Spain.)

Quail Lodge Resort &
Golf Club (Carmel, California) was
the site of Carmel Valley Dairy, owned by Dwight Morrow, Jr., the brother-in-law of Charles Lindburgh. The Lindburghs used
to vacation here frequently. The hotel
sponsors Carmel TomatoFest every September, a unique harvest celebration with
over 200 varieties of heirloom tomatoes.
Participation is limited to 2000 people and the 2002 event is already
sold-out.
Art & Culture

The Davenport Hotel (Spokane, Washington) was built during the mining and timber industry heyday in
1914. This hotel became the centre of
art and culture for a three state radius and was world renown for its handmade
candies. The great niece of one of the
original candy dippers has just joined the staff, bringing with her the
families famous peanut brittle recipe.
Guests have included: 10 US
Presidents, Charles Lindbergh and Bob Hope.

Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa
& Golf Resort (Brescia, Italy),
located in beautiful Verona, was constructed in the 15th Century and retains all of the original
frescoes, hand painted ceilings and marble fireplaces. Guests have included:
Jack Nicklaus, Christian Barnard and Dennis Quaid.

The Heathman Hotel (Portland, Oregon) has a library filled with over 2000 books, many signed by authors
who have stayed at the hotel. The
mezzanine has a curated art show that changes seasonally and there are many
Andy Warhol pieces throughout the hotel and in the “Warhol Suite.” Guests have included: Bette Midler, Luciano
Pavarotti, Salmon Rushdie, Neil Young and Harrison Ford.
Unexpected Roommates

Le Pavillon (New Orleans, Louisiana), which was built in 1907, is set on the site of a theatre that
burnt down under mysterious circumstances.
Many ghosts have been sited at this historic hotel and a team of
parapsychologists were brought in to investigate in 1996. They discovered five entities who live throughout the Hotel. Le Pavillon is on the National Register of
Historic Places.

Metropolitan Hotel
Toronto (Toronto, Canada)
has beautiful hand painted Asian silk images throughout the Hotel and boasts
Lai Wah Heen, a restaurant that has been recognised by The New York Times as
having the “best dim sum in Toronto, maybe the best in North America.” Guests have included: David Bowie, Martha Stewart and Ricky Martin.

Metropolitan Hotel
Vancouver (Vancouver, Canada)
was known as America’s most expensively built hotel when it was built in accordance with
the ancient Chinese tradition of Feng Shui in1984. Guests have included: Janet Jackson, Tina
Turner and Bill Cosby.

Park Hotel Vitznau (Lucerne, Switzerland) has an original World War II Swiss Army bunker available for
private parties. Every year this hotel
hosts an amazing themed ball for the Summer Solstice that is complete with its
fairy tale atmosphere. Guests have
included: Victor Hugo and Mark Twain.

The Landmark
London (London, United Kingdom) has a spectacular eight-story glass roofed atrium as the hotel’s
focal point and the mezzanine level houses “The Winter Garden” restaurant. The Gazebo at “The Winter Garden” can be
rented out for romantic dinners under the stars. This hotel was voted “Best Hotel in
London” in the
London Tourism Awards.

The Peninsula (Chicago, Illinois) has the 3,500 square-foot Peninsula Suite, complete with a piano,
terrace, outdoor hot tub, private workout facility, surveillance room for
security staff or secret service and private dining room to entertain
guests.
Wine Lovers
§
Fifteen Beacon (Boston, Massachusetts) has Boston’s most extensive wine collection,
including 1907 Heidieck Monopole, rescued from a schooner that was sunk by a
German U-boat, a 1937 Romanee Conti Domaine, 22 vintages of Chateaux d’Yquem
and 41 vintages of Lafite. The wine cellar
is available for private dining and maintains the original granite of the 1722
building. Guests have included: Sarah
Jessica Parker, Christy Turlington and Lee Iaccocca.

The San Roque Club (Andalucia, Spain) is an Andalucian mansion that was the former home of the Domecq
family, of the Domecq Sherry Dynasty.
Sherry is still available along with the hotel’s renowned equestrian
centre and Steve Ballesteros School of Golf.
“Hot” Spots

The Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia) has been attracting guests since 1778 when healing powers were
ascribed to the waters of the White Sulphur Springs that flow under the
hotel. Drinking and bathing in the water
was said to relieve any ailment. Today, Conde Nast Traveler calls this the “#1
Resort Destination in North America.” Guests have included 26 U.S.
Presidents along with other royalty and celebrities.

The Hotel De Russie (Rome, Italy) was built in 1817 and the hotel was totally refurbished in 2000
and has now become one of the trendiest hotels in Rome and was named
“Best New Hotel in Italy.” Guests have included:
Former President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Bruce
Willis and Steven Spielberg.

The Huntington Hotel &
Nob Hill Spa (San Francisco,
California) was
recently named by Gourmet Magazine as “one of the 100 great things about
San Francisco”
because of the newly opened spa. The
hotel’s structure was the first steel and brick high rise west of the
Mississippi when
it was built in 1924. Guests have
included: Princess Grace and the Vanderbilt family.
