London 28th July 2015 – Voyages-sncf.com recently carried out a European-wide piece of research to understand what makes the holiday traveller tick! Some of the results were not so surprising, for example something all nationalities had in common throughout the research – by plane is THE most stressful way to travel although at the same time it is the preferred method of getting from a to b.
Going on holiday is one of the most taxing things we can do. We love it and relax perhaps once we get where we are going but the travelling can be somewhat traumatic for a lot of people. Air travel doesn’t seem much fun especially as most people seem to fall out over the holiday arrangements before they even step outside the front door!
The causes of travel stress are similar throughout the Continent – delays, baggage restrictions and queuing! When travelling with children the stress piles on even more. 62% of those questioned said that delays were the highest cause of travel stress, followed by queuing and waiting around in airports (54%) and baggage restrictions (33%).
So what is it that people are looking for when booking their travel? First and foremost it is price (82%) and then the comfort of the travel experience is important – 42% of travellers questioned throughout Europe highlighted this and 39% said that the amount of luggage they could travel with was a very important factor. Lastly the ease of booking was of absolute importance to 35% of those questioned.
These results were very similar in every country where the survey took place but there were slight differences in some of the results between the nations too. The Spanish, for example, worry about not being able to sit together on a plane, so the thought of being able to book a table around which the family can gather on a comfy train is very appealing. The Italians were particularly concerned about the luggage restrictions when flying and were also found to travel with more clothes on so they could get more through! The Swiss and Germans were the most impressed with the eco-friendly credentials of railways.
Nearly everyone loved the friendly nature of train travellers and said that chatting to strangers and picking up travel tips was very important, particularly to the Spanish and Italians. One in ten of the UK passengers said they had actually fallen in love during a train journey! More than 50% of Brits asked said one of their favourite features of travelling by rail was the fact that one may move around and not have to stay seated when journeying.
So air travel is seen as very stressful and for all the reasons given for this, rail travel ticks the boxes for a much more enjoyable experience. It is therefore easy to see that we need to take away the feeling that it is difficult or more expensive to book travel by train and stress the positives!
