A great deal has changed since Les Castels launched in 1959! The organisation now has 41 establishments located across the country – ideal for couples or for families – but in 1959, they started with just 24 sites of which two: the Chateau de Leychoisier in the Limousin and Le Manoir de Ker An Poul in Brittany are still in the chain today. The rare event (which will next occur on 1st October, 2044) is used to determine the diameter of Venus and the structure of Venus’ atmosphere The SR-N1 hovercraft crosses the Channel for the first time in just over two hours. This is the 50th anniversary of Louis Blériot’s crossing by ‘heavier than air craft’ Singer Billie Holiday died August Kind of Blue – the record breaking album by Miles Davis is released Hawaii is admitted as the 50th State of the USA The Mini is launched, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis September The Xerox 914 photocopier is launched to the public October Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone TV series is launched in the USA The Guggenheim Museum opens in New York Asterix the Gaul makes his first appearance Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club opened in London November The first section of the M1 is opened between Hertfordshire and the Northamptonshire/Warwickshire border The film, Ben Hur is released and eventually wins 11 Oscars.
