This year Christmas shoppers can find the perfect gift at one of Basel’s Christmas Markets. From 26th November to 23rd December 2015 Basel Tourism is offering a number of exclusive vouchers to travellers who book accommodation through www.basel.com. These will include: 20% discount for “Vom Fass” on oils, vinegars, liqueurs and spirits; 20% off Christmas ornaments of Santa Claus and 20% discount on cashmere products at Barfüsserplatz; 20% off Creadiva gifts and pottery by Tonhaus Schlünzen at Münsterplatz; and FREE mulled wine with all meal deals at Confiserie Glaser at Claraplatz.
The Basel Christmas market at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz is considered to be the prettiest and largest in Switzerland. Opening for business on the 26th of November there are almost daily events and spectacular special exhibitions in the city’s museums which enrich the cultural ambiance. Both Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz offer numerous stalls where traders and artisans present their wares. Anyone looking for gift ideas will be inspired by the huge array of products and the fairy-tale atmosphere. Plenty of culinary delights are also on offer, be it a cup of mulled wine, waffles, Basler Läckerli biscuits or ever-popular grilled sausages.
Christmas in Basel starts officially at 6.30 pm on 26th November 2015, when the city’s Governing President, Dr Guy Morin, switches on the Christmas lights at Münsterplatz. At the same time, visitors will be able to admire the splendid illuminations adorning the numerous Christmas trees lining the streets of Basel. The musical accompaniment for the opening ceremony will be provided by the Musik Akademie Basel horn ensemble conducted by Stefan Ruf and Theater Basel’s Extra choir, conducted by Henryk Pollus. Free tea, mulled wine and soup will also be provided courtesy of the Basel Association of Charitable Nursing and Retirement Homes (VAP).
