The ancient stones of Chateau de Bressuire in Poitou-Charentes, France will vibrate to the sound of marching bands, bagpipes and Celtic folk music this weekend (9th-10th June) with the European Highland Games team championship, a World Series featuring five different stages across the globe. A sporting event, musical celebration and Celtic Festival in one, the popular Highland Games weekend has been organised every other year since 1991.
An army of over 160 renowned international participants will be taking part in the games, which are (of course) not for the faint hearted! Nine different stength battles include everything from moving the rock, throwing the hammer and the all time Scottish classic, tossing the caber (beloved apparently by our own Diamond Monarch!)
The historic castle, Chateau de Bressuire provides a perfect backdrop to the event, organised by the Association Sportive des Jeux d’Ecosse en France (AJEF). With Scottish and Irish dancing, traditional Scottish food and a festive, lively atmosphere, this unique event brings a touch of the glens to the beautiful countryside of Poitou-Charentes.
