Marilyn Monroe, the ninth of our Vintage Photo Series, is pictured here with co-star Laurence Olivier during a press conference held at The Savoy London, prior to the filming of ‘The Prince and the Showgirl‘ (previously known as ‘The Sleeping Prince’), which Laurence Olivier had also directed and produced. She wore a tight black dress with a net midfriff, which itself caused something of a sensation at the time.
Marilyn and Olivier first met the photographers for pictures and then proceeded to the Lancaster Ballroom of The Savoy where Olivier chaired a question and answer session between Marilyn and a ballroom of journalists. In Laurence Olivier’s later autobiography ‘Confessions of an Actor’ he wrote that upon meeting Marilyn (prior to the films production) he was convinced he was going to fall in love with her.
At the time of the photograph, Marilyn and Olivier were getting on well, but according to contemporary sources their relationship became a little more strained, when he experienced Marilyn’s notorious tardiness during filming. However, he did go on to praise Marilyn’s performance in the film, far above his own performance and admitted in his book that the resulting blockbuster was worth the turmoil during production.
