The Penguin collection of books is perhaps not the first association you would link with a magnificent English country estate, set deep in the glorious Sussex countryside, but it’s certainly an intriguing aspect of the historic Goodwood Estate. Row upon row of Penguin classic paperbacks fill the bookshelves of the Music Room of The Kennels, the Members’ only club housed in the James Wyatt designed building facing Goodwood House itself.
The 5,000 pre-loved books were bought as an entire collection when The Kennels was refurbished. Although a keen eyed literary buff may notice there are a few duplicates of some famous works, this is a clever and artistic note.
Although these Penguin editions are too precious to be borrowed by guests, The Goodwood Hotel offers an eclectic mix of books in every room, reflecting a variety of aspects of the Estate and guests are encouraged to read, borrow and swap.
Since the redesign of the Music Room, The Kennels and Goodwood House itself have been privileged to host events with both Penguin and Pearson. Penguin is currently “rewrapping” over 100 English classics this year, with the first 20 having been released into the wild 26th April 2012.
