Known as the ‘Town of Hundred Bells’ due to the 24 parishes and 30 monasteries within its boundaries, Poitiers in Poitou-Charentes is the proud owner of a brand new city centre ‘Coeur d’agglo’. The project incorporated everything from new green spaces such as the rue de Puygarreau, new bus routes, public areas, pedestrian zones, street lighting and paving. The plans have also ensured a clean-up of the buildings, new and improved traffic circulation and an accentuation of the architectural heritage of the town – all in all, a huge 25 million Euros has been invested on this charming city!
The new look has undoubtedly brought a new-found ‘buzz’ to the city – spirits are high and this classic University town is enjoying a new lease of life. The rejuvenation has ensured the ‘old’ is perfectly complemented by the new – Poitiers has 80 buildings which are classified as Historical Monuments! The most famous are the Notre-Dame-La-Grande church, the Baptistery of Saint Jean dating back to the beginning of Christianity in Europe and the Saint-Hilaire church.
Poitiers is a fascinating city which has experienced a transformation, it is full of energy, culture and is a delightful place to visit during a trip to Poitou-Charentes
