Japanese daydreams – Enjoy a superb Japanese picnic of sushi and sashimi, with dessert to follow, looking out over the mystical Sintra Mountains. Priced at just €30 per person and available from Tuesday to Friday from 6pm, the picnic has been devised by the culinary team behind Penha Longa’s award-winning Midori restaurant. Penha Longa has an historic link with Japan as the Estate played host to the first European visit of a Japanese prince, back in the 15th century.
The passion of Fado – Enjoy the mystery and romance of Fado performance and obtain an insight into the Portuguese character, whilst staying in the luxurious surroundings of Penha Longa. Fado is a form of music which is sung by everyone in Portugal – old and young – and is really immersed in the melancholic soul of the Portuguese. Composed of four-line stanzas based on a story of great passion or sung simply as a poem, the singer is traditionally accompanied by a 12-string Portuguese classical guitar. Fado first appeared in Portugal at the end of the eighteenth century, as a nostalgic form of song favoured by sailors – its name derives from the Latin word fatum, meaning “fate” or “destiny”. The Fado package (valid from 28th April until 5th May 2008) is priced at €600 per package for a double room and includes two nights’ accommodation, breakfast buffet, dinner in “Clube do Fado” in Alfama with Fado show and an entrance ticket to the Museu do Fado in Lisbon.
Tastes of the world – assaMassa, Penha Longa’s main, highly rated restaurant, is featuring each month a different cuisine from around the world with its popular Sunday brunch menu, which is €42 per person. In April, for instance, enjoy a taste of Moorish Morocco with tagines straight from the oven, full of aromatic spices; May sees a focus on Brazil with authentic Fish Moqueca, Oven Roast Picanha and their seafood buffet. In June, attention turns to India with mouthwatering curries from Goa to Bombay whilst in July, the simply yet stylish cuisine of the French Riviera is celebrated.

There is a full and varied calendar of wine tasting events throughout the year and Penha Longa’s sommelier, Juliao Milisse, provides introductions to the vintage ports of Portugal, offers vertical tastings of the same wine from three different years and will even arrange private visits to Portugal’s private wine estates.
