The historic London Bridge Hotel has been stylishly updated in its design and is now home to contemporary and luxurious guestrooms as well as an exciting new restaurant, with the completion of the first phase of renovations. The hotel, which opened in 1998 and was previously a wartime telephone exchange, is situated in the electrifying London borough of Southwark. The dcor of the hotel rooms was previously of a traditional style but the rooms have now been given an urban and contemporary redesign, creating the same mood as the buzzy and trendy area in which the hotel is situated. The opening of Londinium marks the addition of another great restaurant to the already exciting and dynamic local restaurant scene.
Interior Designer Anne Jordan, the creative mind behind the new style of London Bridge Hotel, describes her aim as to simplify the interior finishes and colours to create a feeling of calm and well-being, whilst at the same time to exceed guest expectations for facilities and design. The result is a blend of sensual and relaxed interiors in the form of warm colour schemes, good lighting and luxurious finishes including large flat screen televisions, contemporary photographic artwork, faux suede and leather, linen curtains and crisp white bed linen summed up by Anne Jordan as a gentle background in which to relax and establish oneself within an interior that is both adaptable to and considerate of the needs of hotel guests. The renovations have enhanced London Bridge Hotels position as a relaxing haven in the city, in the heart of an area that is currently enjoying a new era of prosperity and growth. As well as a host of museums and cultural attractions, Southwark also boasts some of the most spectacular architecture in the capital and within walking distance of the City, making it an ideal venue for business and leisure travellers alike.
Anne Jordans inspiration for the design of London Bridge Hotels new restaurant, Londinium, came from a view of London through the eyes of Peter Ackroyd in his work London The Biography. Looking at the past and present and the echoic quality of London, the texture and history of London is reflected in the new restaurant, which is a flavour of a selection of different elements. The colour red, long symbolic of energy and strength is also the colour of the iron rich London soil, the blood of many battles fought on the soil, the Great Fire of London (started only a short distance away), the famous Smithfield meat market, horse guards jackets and bright red London buses. The light coloured painted walls, meanwhile, are representative of London stone and the many Roman walls, sections of which are still present today in the foundations of London Bridge Hotel. When work was being carried out on the site to transform it into the hotel in 1998, some fascinating Roman and medieval artefacts were discovered including a Roman comb and mosaic flooring. The restaurants design is complemented by a modern British menu, giving both hotel guests and non-residents a great dining option in this foodie area of London. The second phase of renovations is currently underway and will see the transformation of the hotels lobby and remaining bedrooms.
