Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Rosewood's acclaimed Five-Diamond resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, now offers butler service at no additional charge.

"The small number of hotels and resorts worldwide that offer butler service generally have one butler for 10 or more rooms, but at Las Ventanas, to ensure the most personalised and highest level of service, it's one butler for each suite," said Managing Director Luis Fernandes. "This allows the butler's role to be played to perfection."

Las Ventanas' butlers are multi-skilled, multi-tasking professionals who see to every possible need of the guest, handling every detail unobtrusively, even unseen, whenever possible. They liaise with the guests to learn as much as possible about preferences, needs and expectations, and to plan and coordinate their schedule, from making spa appointments to setting up dinner reservations and tennis lessons. This process begins in advance of the guests' arrival by email and fax, and continues when the butler meets arriving guests at the airport with a chauffeured car and accompanies them to the resort. Upon arrival at Las Ventanas, guests receive a pre-programmed mobile phone and merely need to push a button to instantly reach the butler.

To implement the guests' wishes and itinerary, butlers not only smoothly and seamlessly liaise with the entire resort service staff, but also assume all the service roles they normally play. For example, room service orders are neither taken nor served by room service personnel. The butlers do it. They ensure it's delivered at the exact requested time and everything is how the guests want it. If the guests also have laundry to send out, want shoes shined or have any other needs, the room service staffers would need to call the appropriate other service departments. The butlers, however, will take care of it all, whatever it may be, so that the guest will not be disturbed again by additional service personnel.

The butlers create a personal daily diary listing every activity and appointment, from spa treatments and dinner reservations to outings such as yacht excursions or shopping expeditions. The daily diaries are then compiled in a Memory Book of their stay at Las Ventanas for guests to take home. Personal butler service is currently available for the resort's four one-bedroom suites and the three-bedroom Presidential Suite, but will eventually be offered in all 61 suites. Las Ventanas is the only resort in Los Cabos to offer a dedicated, personal butler service.

When Managing Director Luis Fernandes decided to initiate a butler programme at Las Ventanas, he turned to the profession's most renowned trainer, Robert Watson, founder and director of the Guild of Professional English Butlers as well as director of the Gentlemen Butlers Guild. He has set up and trained butler departments at some of the world's most acclaimed hotels and resorts, from The Bellagio in Las Vegas to the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Lanesborough Hotel in London. In the 1990s, when Mr. Fernandes was Managing Director of Rosewood's The Dharmawangsa Hotel in Jakarta, Mr. Watson helped him establish one of the top butler programmes in Asia.

"With the butler service, guests are taken care of like never before," explained Fernandes. "For example, they may return to their suite in the afternoon to find the clothes they wish to wear that evening cleaned, pressed and hanging in the closet. A schedule of the next day's appointments and activities is on the bed. Their tea service is set up on the terrace, with shots of their preferred brandy, while one of their favourite classical pieces is emanating from the speakers."
