The Board of the four and five star camping site organisation, Les Castels, met in Paris on 12th January 2016 to sign an agreement for 2016 with Le Clef Verte (Green Key) – the top international tourism environmental label.
The aim is clear – that all of the sites will become 100% green by the end of 2016. The mind-set has been ingrained in Les Castels since their inception in 1959 so that protection of the environment and heritage are second nature to the members.
The move towards working so closely with La Clef Verte has been gathering momentum for the last five years. Some of the campsites have installed solar panels, solar powered heating pumps for the swimming pools, use of electric vehicles on site, no plastic bags used in the shops, reusable goods wherever possible, light detectors for outdoor illumination and composting and compacting rubbish – these are just some of the initiatives that have been put in place.
The Green Key label was started by the Foundation for the Education on the Environment (www.laclefverte.org) to reference tourism organisations such as hotels, campsites, theme parks etc that take an active role in promoting ecotourism and helping the environment by how they dispose of waste, how they use water, energy and also how they educate the public about ecosystems.
