Sardón de Duero, Spain – (DATE), 2014: Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, the exclusive abbey hotel and winery dating from 1146 in Spain’s Duero wine region, is transforming the estate’s former stable into a nurturing and innovative sanctuary of holistic healing and wellness.
El Santuario, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine’s new spa, will open its doors in summer 2015 featuring 10,000-sq.-ft. of ultra-luxurious facilities, a ground-breaking vinotherapy concept and the spa industry’s first “Spa Sommelier.”
“El Santuario will be one of Europe’s great spas, offering the highest levels of luxury, guest service and individualisation,” said Managing Director Andres Araya. “We are breaking new ground in personalisation with the introduction of a Spa Sommelier and treatment programmes based on a blind tasting ritual.”
The Spa Sommelier is a highly specialised professional who will deliver an unprecedented level of guest service and customisation based on a bespoke vinotherapy method. He will conduct a “blind tasting ritual” for each guest, comprising of a selection of oils, wines and other beverages. The Spa Sommelier will then analyse their palette and aroma preferences and recommend spa experiences to fulfil their individual wellness needs. Not only the tasting ritual but the entire spa experience at El Santuario will simulate the traditional wine-tasting experience.
The spa at Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine will feature four individual treatment rooms and a Spa Suite equipped with everything from a Finnish sauna and a steam bath to an experience shower and hydrotherapy pool. There will be separate, beautifully appointed ladies’ and men’s changing areas. Guests will be immersed in soothing organic colours reflecting the hues of the surrounding natural terrain, and relax in comfortable, ergonomic, high-quality wood and fabric furniture. Large skylights will bathe the spa in natural light, exuding a warm and comforting atmosphere. An indoor heated pool will be complemented by an outdoor pool among the vineyards.
The menu will embody the two personalities of Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine: the classic property with a 900-year-old history and the vineyards that produce acclaimed wines. Classical treatments and services – massages, body scrubs, body wraps, facials and grooming – will be blended with authentic, indigenous rituals based on the wine traditions of the local region and LeDomaine’s award-winning winery. Guests may indulge in their favourite treatments that are familiar and soothing or opt for innovative vinotherapy-inspired experiences that are spirit-lifting and energising.
Setting the table for enhanced wellness and healing will be tantalising Spa Cuisine. Nutritious, healthy and light, it will complement the spa experiences as well as be mouth-watering. The menu is being created by Pablo Montero the hotel’s Head Chef, alongside his mentor, one of Spain’s superstar chefs and restaurateurs, Andoni Luis Aduriz, who is also LeDomaine’s Gastronomy Manager.
El Santuario will be one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable spas in Spain. A system with state-of-the-art technology uses solar panels and groundwater pumps to generate energy for heating and cooling. Geothermal storage systems compensate for the seasonal fluctuations in energy demand. A dedicated water-treatment plant allows water to be recycled and used for irrigation.
To develop the spa, the architect came up with an ingenious concept to overcome the high moisture level of the soil due to the proximity of the Duero River. The problem was solved by designing an impermeable “shoe box” structure and building the spa inside of it.
Notes for editors: Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine opened in 2012 after a complete restoration that sensitively and imaginatively brought the property into the 21st century – and earned it a Europa Nostra Award from the European Union for conserving cultural heritage. Newly opened LeDomaine was the first hotel in Spain to offer a full butler service and is a proud member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux hotel and restaurant guide. Recently, LeDomaine became the first hotel in Europe to provide Google Glass for guests’ use during their stay. In addition to creating the El Santuario spa, the hotel currently is also adding eight new guest spa rooms that will be completed in summer 2015.
The Refectorio, once the abbey’s dining hall, is a sanctuary of haute cuisine under the direction of Andoni Luis Aduriz, one of Spain’s leading chefs whose heralded Mugaritz restaurant in San Sebastian has two Michelin Stars. In addition to the Refectorio, guests dine outdoors in the Cloisters courtyard and in the atmospheric setting of the Wine Cellar.
Of the estate’s 1,730 acres of prime farmland, 500 acres are dedicated to the vine. The winery produces award-winning vintages of exceptional pedigree and is among the most advanced in Europe in combining ancient wine-making traditions with cutting-edge technology. Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is a two-hour drive or train ride from Madrid, and a 30-minute drive from Valladolid.
