To honour the great F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of The Plaza’s most famous patrons, New York’s most beloved hotel unveiled this stunning addition to their festive decorations this year – The Great Gatsby Holiday Tree.
Famously the setting for one of the quintessential scenes of the book, The Plaza and The Great Gatsby have come together to create a spectacle that is worthy of the drama and glitter of the 1920s literary masterpiece. Oscar winner and production designer extroadinaire Catherine Martin designed the tree to pay homage to the highly anticipated new film ‘The Great Gatsby’ launching May 2013, the original great American novel and of course, the iconic hotel.
The stunning 5.5 m (18 foot) tree is lavished with 45kg (100 lbs) of glass, gold and silver ornaments encased by glimmering, floating snowflakes, exuburating all the elegance of the 1920s. The Plaza knows this glamour all too well – it was the ultimate destination to be and be seen in the 1920s… and therefore no wonder F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda spent so much time there! The famous confrontation between Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby takes place in a suite at The Plaza. To ensure filming of this scene did justice to the era, Catherine Martin who previously won an oscar for her work on ‘Moulin Rouge!‘ called on the hotel to provide hundreds of historic images and archives to create the most historically accurate set – a mammoth task! The team then built a mock suite on the Australian set, ensuring it was authentic to all the delights of the 20s!
