Pousadas de Portugal

The Portuguese Pousadas, a similar concept to the Paradors of Spain, are a network of more than 40 unique hotels that reflect the rich diversity, culture and traditions of the Portuguese regions in which they are situated. First launched just over half a century ago, today, the Pousadas de Portugal are located right across the country, from Minho green and rustic valleys to the Trás-os-Montes luxuriant mountains, to the Alentejo golden plains and the Algarve coast with its fine sand and warm waters.

Each experience is different, with some Pousadas offering an authentic, historic experience or a more contemporary vibe (Historic Pousadas and Historic Design Pousadas) while others offer a more intimate, cosy experience in former private residences (Charm Pousadas) and beautiful, natural scenery (Nature Pousadas).

In October 2005 the first Pousada outside of Portugal was opened in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The Convento do Carmo Hotel is a result of the restoration and renovation of an imposing Carmelite convent dating from 1586.
