Royal Savoy, Madeira

Fact Sheet

Occupying the site of the old Savoy Lido, the Royal Savoy, opened February 2002, is situated on the oceanfront in the Bay of Funchal.  A new hotel development, masterminded by the owners of the century-old Hotel Savoy, Horacio Roque and Jose Berardo, the Royal Savoy features 162 luxurious studios, suites and penthouses, all offering breathtaking views over the Atlantic.

The opening of the Royal Savoy allows The Savoy Group of Hotels to offer a true resort experience, with guests choosing to stay either at the more traditional “classic” Hotel Savoy or the state of the art, contemporary Royal Savoy, whilst sharing jointly the facilities of both properties.

Décor                                                  The illusion of East meets West has been skilfully created in public areas with the dispersion of an array of exotic and unconventional furniture.  African canoes are suspended from the ceilings, Pygmy beds act as coffee tables, Asian parakeet cages stand on French Armoires and wedding artefacts.  The décor gives the hotel a feeling of glorious travel and cultures, harmoniously mixing the past, present and future.

The Gardens:                                     In order to create the large area of sub-tropical gardens and swimming pools, some 8,300 square metres of land were reclaimed from the Atlantic.  The Royal Savoy stands ten stories tall, with the slope of the land screening the new building from the main access road to the town.

The outdoor relaxation areas, a semi triangle extending out into the sea, has two giant outdoor heated swimming pools; a children’s pool; barbeque areas and boat moorings.  Lush vegetation, fountains and waterfalls complete the impression of a semi-tropical paradise.

Restaurants & Bars                          For gastronomic pleasure, the Royal Savoy prides itself on offering a selection of delicacies to suit all tastes from Al Fresco barbeque specialities served from the St. Valentine’s fort to exciting buffet spreads with themed evenings at the Galley Restaurant.  The more formal à la Carte Armada Restaurant offers exquisite delicacies depicting tales of the vast expansive ocean to the West and the Exotic wonders of the intriguing East.  One can relax in the piano bar to live music and entertainment or alternatively sip a favourite cocktail at the Neptunus pool bar.
